On the 6th of July, 2024, Tree Adoption Uganda in partnership with Climate Inclusion Network successfully conducted environmental education and tree planting in Iganga District. The two schools that were beneficiaries of this initiative were Bulumwaki Church of Uganda Primary School and Akanabala-Bulanga Church of Uganda Primary School. This was part of a wider campaign targeting a total of 10 schools in which 200 trees are to be planted.
At Bulumwaki Church of Uganda Primary School, 20 trees which included species like grevillea were planted and mapped during the exercise using the Tree Adoption Uganda Application (Can be accessed on Google Playstore). The pupils were also taken through a session of environmental education which amongst others included important lessons on how to be good environmental stewards both at School and in their general community as well.
Speaking to the team after the conclusion of the exercise, Oliver Namutubu who is the Headmistress of Bulumwaki Church of Uganda Primary School hailed the duo for the amazing work that they did at her school.
“Allow me thank you Tree Adoption Uganda and Climate Inclusion Network for choosing us out of the so many schools in this area. We are very happy that you have taught our children about the environment and also given us trees which we are going to ensure that we take very good care of,” she said.
Her sentiments were re-echoed by her counterpart, Sarah Nangobi, the Headmistress of Akanabala-Bulanga Church of Uganda Primary School.
“We appreciate you for your time and sacrifice to in coming here to our school to interact with our learners and also plant trees with them. We are happy and hope that you will return to continue with this project,” she stated.
These statements were made in response to the 20 trees that were planted at the school and also the session of environmental education with the primary six class.
Both schools expressed a desire to nurture the trees and ensure that they are protected from being destroyed before they can reach their full maturity.
The exercise in these two schools was just a snippet of the three day long campaign after which, a total of 10 schools is expected to have been covered with 200 trees planted and mapped.
