Climate and Health

The inaugural Climate and Health Symposium held on the 14th November, 2023 at Protea Hotel Kampala under the theme, “Building a Low Carbon, Climate Adaptive and Resilient Health System in Uganda,” registered overwhelming success and this has served as a launching pad for the second edition.

The much anticipated second edition of this Symposium is slated for the 15th of October, 2024 and this year’s theme is, “Leveraging Community Strengths for Climate Resilient Health Systems in Africa.” This event is being organized by Tree Adoption Uganda in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization in Uganda.

This year’s symposium aims to highlight local communities' critical role in addressing climate change's health impacts. By focusing on grassroots empowerment, the conference will explore how community-led initiatives, local knowledge, and bottom-up approaches can drive sustainable and resilient health solutions.

Participants from across Africa will share experiences, innovations, and strategies to build capacity, enhance resilience, and improve health outcomes in the face of climate change. Registration to attend the Symposium is free of charge using the link: https://forms.gle/cvdudM71dZkFtGcV7

In addition, a host of sub-thematic areas have been identified where prospective participants can be able to develop abstracts for presentation on that day. These include:

  1. Health Impacts of Climate Change
  2. Health benefits of Climate Mitigation
  3. Community Health Systems and Climate Resilience
  4. Indigenous Knowledge and Practices in Climate Adaptation
  5. Sustainable Livelihoods and Economic Adaptation Strategies
  6. Policy and Governance for Community-Led Climate Action
  7. Education, Awareness and Capacity Building

The abstracts can be submitted using the link: https://forms.gle/c7pZr4yH9M5pEjUx7. However, the deadline for the submission of abstracts is the 20th of September, 2024. Thus, all those intending to submit the abstracts ought to do it as quick as possible.

Amongst others, the outcomes of the Symposium are: comprehensively assessing the health sector’s status in relation to climate change across Africa, enhancing the understanding of community-led initiatives and grassroots empowerment and analyzing the Health National Adaptation Plan.
